Pho on 5th- Hillcrest

Pho offers to bring the Vietnamese pho soup selection to the Hillcrest community. Nestled between st. Tropez and starbucks, the Vietnamese addition brings a booth style cafeteria venue to the hood.

For starters, it's ghastly white in there... Meaning the lights and windows that face the sun. A little too bright actually. The menu options are extensive, with every variety of pho soup offerings one can think of

The spring rolls came wrapped with a rather thick piece of pork and a light semi sweet rice vinegar dipping sauce:

The pho soup with flank steak, one of the few non rare meat options, was a hearty bowl of chicken stock soup, scallions, pieces of flank, and the standard veggie pile of sprouts, basil leaves, slice jalepeno and lime that comes to flavor the soup:

The soup was tasty, however the flank steak pieces were full of fat, almost reminiscent of raw bacon from the biggest pored there is. It was rather displeasing, that I had to chopstick the pieces out. Other than that, the soup base was pretty good.

The marinaded chicken came served on top of a bbed of vermicelli rice noodles, cabbage and lettuce:

The chicken was good, but a little heavy on the greens with no flavor.

Overall, this place reminds me more of a lunch spot for a basic staple. The white lights and simple tasting food might cater to some, bu would not recommend for an intimate dining experience.

Tarragon topped pizza bites

So who says the French can have all the fun with tarragon? Warm days remind me of picnics on the seine river, with baguette in hand, a tarragon mustard drenched salad and plenty of Brie to make your cholesterol levels peak!

Well back in sun filled SD, the aromatic tarragon can make an excellent topping for a pizza... Espeially one topped with Romano cheese shavings and crispified with some olive oil to burnt baby bottom perfection:

Topped with a tarragon finished garlic pesto, watch out work collleagues ;)

With a fabulous bottle from the cellar

La postale cabernet Sauvignon, a Chilean baby blend with 2 percnt Cabernet franc! Ruby red with an elegant plum ripe palate and spice kick... Baby Watch out... This Chilean French combo will put a little happy into anybody..

Terra Hillcrest

A quick stop at Terra had us make the observation that new art pieces were adorning the walls. The environment still needs a complete makeover but it's at least a start.

The chicken and fruit salad was a hearty portion, roasted chicken slices, tomatoes, beets and golden raisins was quite good:

The black bass coated with sesame seeds and togadashi was served over udon noodles:

The fish was cooked well, the noodles however were too salty. This dish unortuneately did not go down well. A little sensitive these days, something just didn't work out.

The salad however was something that would be perfec for a hot summer day lunch.

Uptown folks get 20 percent off..

Migas con ajo

Ever have huevos con migas? It's a classic morning Mexican dish were tortillas are fried to a crisp crunch and cooked with scrambled eggs. Cheese and tomatoes are often added. It's a hearty breakfast an oh so good. Especially with the jalepeno juice soaked carrots.

Well in the age of cholesterol and heart conditions and Minding the swimsuit figure, it's time to modernize this classic Little dish. That also means no chorizo!

Pieces of whole wheat lavash bread were sauteed in 100 percent virgin olive oil, baby heirloom tomatoes and a garlic and spice blend from the homes of the Hani brothers (a garlic Greek specialty from the farmers market).

The aromas were infusing the body with garlic... So watch out peeps.

Add the eggs, scramble to a joyous perfection and eat your little heart out. The potent garlic and tomatoe freshness with the crisp lavash bread enhanced with the olive oil makes for a great reinvetion of the popular Migas! (pronounced meee-gaahs).

Ono .. O No

Ono sushi has some good creations, tasty sauces and vibrant atmosphere. The sushi is not overwhelming like you get at sushi ota in PB or at ozumo in SF, but it's definately tasty.

Ahi Tartare served with seaweed salad. The chunks are good, seaweed refreshing but needs some taro chips.

There was one time when I sent back an ahi steak because it was overcooked..seared after all is only 1min on each side and should never be cooked throughout. At that time, fresh potatoe chips were requested since the salt and crunch go so well with the raw meaty tuna. They complied, but without hesistation. Well they are now officially part of the dish as part of popular demand!

Moving onto some rolls, the dragon was covered with avocado and eel... A favorite combo, and glazened with a semi sweet teriyaki sauce:

Cooked Unagi, crispified on the outer edge was fantastic.

These little crab rolls topped with tobilko caviar were you're glorfied California roll.. Not a fan of a mess dressed to impress.

Defiantely more of a scene then a scene to feast.

Ms Saigon never had it so good

A Saigon stop was in order for some tasty Vietnamese.

The lemon steak salad has been upgraded to offer a couple of mounds of meat:

Basil, lime and vinegar and red cabbage juice make this tangy sweet and sour steak salad fantastic. Crunchy with peanuts and crisp cucumber.

The lemongrass soup with chicken and brown rice was great as well. Straw hat mushrooms, onions, spicy broth, boiled chicken and lemongrass:

Ms Saigon keeps on tantalizing the tastebuds

Fingerfoods: finger lickin or finger flickin?

It's sometimes amazing how fingerfood can get out of control. It's suppose to be finger food.. I.e stuff you pick up with one hand and shove in your mouth as you walk the line, peruse the crowd or quietly eat your dinner in small bites.

But sometimes, you go to events where not even two hands can get the "amusebusch" into your smiley jaws.

Here's an example a good single handed crab cakes tha you can pop easily in between conversations:

A little bacon wrapped scallop got in there somehow... Hmmm

Although I love sushi, it's not really a great finger food. With wine glasses, wasabi, soy sauce and chopsticks, how is one to elegantly eat while on the go working a crowd full of sharks?

Not so easy...

And occassionally you get complete handfuls where you have to turn away from people just to taste:

The perfect grab and go.. Mea on a stick...

Little bruschetti with tomatoe toppings to fall all over while you bite don't need engineers to tell you it's not a grab and go food:

Little packed goodness in bite sized to go triangles definately a finger food plus:

What's your finger delight?

Tao--normal heights

Every time you ask someone in the area wher the best Chinese or Vietnamese or Asian food exists in the Sd area, everyone points to convoy st.

A little treasure spot exists in normal heights called Tao. It's Japanese, Vietnamese and vegeterian all at once.

Don't go for the decor. Service is attentive and friendly. You are greeted with a home made tofu salad with a light berry based vinagrette:

The seven shrimp dish was great, literally 7 shrimps :

Spicy levels were good, multigrain brown rice and crisp veggies complemented the plate.

The 5 citrus chicken had a blend of oranges, mango and lemon to give you a flavorful sauce. The chikn however was definately boiled first then mixed with the sauce which would had adopted more of the flavor had it all been stir fried and burnt to perfection:

The eggplant with string beans was also great..

Complimentary lemon ice cream with ripe and flavorful strawberry brought a smile to all of us

Tao offers good bites at great prices.

El rey Mano PB

Every now and then a random even takes you to an unforesaken stretch of land and you are left hungry and starving with not that many options around.

An authentic mexican food dive spot was discovered getting your typical oil change and running away from the Weinerschitzel hut as fast as one possible can.

Walking in, Spanish banter, telenovelas playing on in the background and a series of workers gave the spot an interesting flare. The menu contained all your basics: tacos a la parilla, carne asada burritos, sopa de mariscos and a variety of other things you don't see many places.

The carne asada burrito was on. Out comes this 3 inch wrapped baby. Pure meat and tortilla, that's it.. No beans, no rice, keep it pure:

The inner workings:

The mystery sauce dispensers had a red hot sauce and a mild tomatillo salsa that were both actually good:

At 4 bucks a burrito, this little spot deserves a couple of visits.

Taco's & fideo

Bring out the pico pica and the chalula sauce. A little spontaneous family picture event turned into a taco festivity...

Handmade, ground beef tacos with all the fixings...

Accompanied by no other than fideo.. Don't ask, it's An in law thing:

Fideo is probably the only Mexican pasta type dish made with chicken bouillon cubes...

Crunch away...

Farmer market keeps on giving

The hunt continues for good eats at the farmers market. Sizzling gyros with onions and tzatziki sauce were callin out:

Grab em while they're hot!

Add a little hot sauce to the gyro meat and bam! Instantly transmexify your gyro...

The spinach treats, sizzled on the grill has the popeyes and olive oils smiling:

Grilled meats ahead, chicken skewers were a must:

Add some veggies for a chicken delight plate:

Finally, ripe and tasty tomatoes!

East african foods were taunting in the corner stand:

Fresh lemonade on a hot day like today cooled it all down:

Press away.
It's much more fun to eat your brunch on the go here...

R gang eatery hillcrest

The old busalacchi's on 5th next to the tractor room has been converted into a new space serving American small creative plates.

Well, the space is still feeling it's vibe, overly enthusiastic hosts waiting for new arrivals, the menu had a variety of eclectic flavors.

For starters, tried the ahi tartare. Was a little surprised to get cooked tuna serve on flower crisps:

It was tasty, however ahi tartare should be raw. It's a little disappointing that many places are shying away from raw foods.

The tomatoe soup was hearty, almost a but like a ragu sauce. The polenta chunks were awful. Dried out and stale!

This one needs a remake!

The tenderloin skewers with pesto mint was actually fantastic:

The decor has to change and the place needs to find it's happy medium, but a potential turn around for this once old school Italian spot seems to be in the work.

Dynamic duos-- tarragon y pesto

Let the tantalizing taste buds rejoice in the skies above us...

Spiking in a pesto base with a little potent tarragon, simmering the flavors in a devilish little dance, brings some might flavor to the white meat of choice:

With a little pita pesto flatbread magic, the inner gods are smiling :

Had to grab a piece ... Lol

Feeling like a refreshing citrus dessert? Splash a little blueberry into your lemon sorbet for another dynamic duo.
